Why We Write

February 24, 2010

Recently I came across a query on a website for writers.  The question was whether or not to start a blog and who would read it if she/he did.  It's true that there are thousands upon thousands of bloggers and websites out there and I'm not sure who does read them.  This made me stop and think why I blog or why I even write.

I feel the need to connect through creation is what motivates most writers, artists, musicians.  Whether or not there will be an audience, who can say.  But the need to create, to communicate, is still there nevertheless.  Is there ego involved?  Probably so, in some cases, most definitely so.  To have someone listen to what we feel, or what we think we know is affirming and to some degree a measure of our worth.

There are certainly other reasons for writing but without this need to be affirmed why would anyone attempt to be published?  Why would an artist display their art?  Why would the musician perform before an audience?

Of course, it's always nice if you can make a living at your chosen form of creation.
